Hearst Lecture Series

The series has been in place for a number of years and is funded through an endowment given by the Hearst Corporation. The endowment was a one time gift and the intrest from the endowment is used for each year's speaker. The endowment has allowed the CAED to guarantee that the series continues (technically forever), and while the department is susceptible to fluctuations in the financial markets (investment returns) they are able to do advance planning because of the guaranteed funding.

While the Hearst Corporation accepts grant applications as a general rule, the CAED has a special connection which may have played a role in this gift. Landscape Architect alum Austin Hearst is a grandson of William Randolph Hearst and so has a special place in his heart for the college. (You can read the profile on him written in 2099 edition of Connections Magazine)

Speakers are chosen by the lecture committee which usually is chaired by the same person for two years in a row. This means that as leadership changes the approach/theme changes. The current chair for the 2009-2011 period is professor Mark Cabrinha.
